Chronic osteomyelitis surgery

Chronic osteomyelitis, or chronic bone infection, is defined and characterised by progressive infection of the bone marrow and cortex, resulting in destruction of bone, bone necrosis. It may occur at any age and can involve any bone. Often, a multidisciplinary approach is required, involving expertise in orthopaedic surgery, infectious diseases and plastic surgery.

The bacterial growth inhibiting BonAlive® granules is the world’s first and only resorbable biomaterial for bone regeneration that can be used for bone cavity filling in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis.

BonAlive® granules has been proven effective for bone cavity filling in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. In cases where the cavitary defect allows sufficient debridement of the necrotic tissues, BonAlive® granules can be used in a one-stage procedure to fill the dead space. BonAlive® granules will effectively inhibit the bacterial growth, and therefore protect itself from getting infected, while it actively stimulates new bone formation, i.e. healing of the dead space.

In patients where sufficient debridement of the necrotic tissues is not possible, BonAlive® granules can be safely used in the second procedure where the bacterial growth inhibiting feature brings additional security to prevent postoperative infections.

The key benefit of BonAlive® granules is that bacterial species cannot easily survive in the conditions in the vicinity of BonAlive® granules making it a powerful tool for the treatment of bone cavities derived from chronic bone infections.

BonAlive® granules has a 7-year history in bone cavity filling in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis
